Concrete, famous for its sturdiness and durability has been used since the Roman times and dates back thousands of years. In Syria and Jordon, remnants of intact 8000-year-old concrete floors and houses have been found. Not only is it one of the best building materials, its aesthetic beauty never fails to impress us. There are many concrete buildings across the world that leave us spellbound with their strength and splendor and mesmerize us with their magnificence.
1. THE COLOSSEUM, ROME
One of the greatest tourist attractions of the world, The Colosseum stands strong with 240 concrete arches. It has withstood destruction and natural catastrophes and it is proof of the strength of concrete as a building material.
2. BURJ KHALIFA, DUBAI
The tallest building in the history of mankind and my source of inspiration. The majority material used in this marvel is reinforced concrete which has helped it withstand Dubai’s harsh heat.
3. CIDADE DAS ARTES, RIO DE JANEIRO
A resplendent concrete building located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, The Cidade das Artes is a cultural complex designed by French architect, Christian de Portzamparc. Its architectural style is contemporary and it is one of the biggest concert halls in South America.
4. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BRAZIL
Another architectural marvel from Brazil designed by master architect Oscar Niemeyer, the master of curved concrete who created more than 600 buildings before he died, each phenomenal in itself. He was famous for his avant-garde concrete curves. His buildings were futuristic and the curves were inspired by the waves and mountains. His innovative and revolutionary architectural style was the stuff Hollywood movies are made of.
5. PETRONAS TOWERS, MALAYSIA
One of the heaviest buildings of the world, they comprise of intensely tough reinforced concrete. The 88-storey building has more than50mn pounds of concrete and holds a world record of longest uninterrupted concrete pours i.e. 54 hours per tower.
